Woven Kelp Series (2024-2025)

Woven works crafted from bull kelp (Durvillaea potatorum), gathered from washed up forests along the coastline. A species critical to the health of Australia’s marine ecosystems, bull kelp forests are rapidly declining due to climate change and environmental stressors, so this piece serves as a tribute to its critical role in supporting our marine environment. Bull kelp helps protect coastlines by absorbing wave energy, provides shelter and breeding grounds for marine life, and aids in carbon sequestration.

I acknowledge that the Palawa people of Lutruwita were the first to use bull kelp to create water carriers thousands of years ago. They crafted these vessels with great respect for the natural world. The knowledge and sustainable practices of the Palawa people continue to inspire my work today.
